Poor Amy

Last night we had Amy almost ready to go to sleep. Her room was cleaned up, she was in her jammies, we had sung and read a story. Then during the middle of the prayer, Amy made a break for the door. She often does that. Matt, who was praying, noticed and shifted over to make sure Amy wouldn't be able to escape. He didn't touch her, but somehow she tripped while she was walking. She bonked her head on the door on her way down and immediately started crying. Matt grabbed her to see if she was ok. She wasn't. Her head had hit the hinge and there was a pretty deep though small gash in her forehead. It was bleeding pretty bad. We took her to the bathroom and cleaned it up and put a bandaid on.

Amy was quite shaken and took a while to settle down. We both snuggled her and danced and sang to help her calm down. When Matt finally did put her down, she started crying all over again, but it didn't last long. He was concerned that hitting her head could have consequences we didn't know and called the after-hours nurse at our pediatrician's office. The nurse suggested we get Amy up for the next hour and watch for a few things - different sized pupils, vomiting, fever, Amy walking funny. Anything out of the ordinary.

So Amy got an extra hour or so awake last night. At first all she wanted to do was snuggle, but she got more playful. She did walk a little funnier than usual, but we blamed that on sleepiness. She really seemed fine. Only problem was we realized the blood was oozing out of the bandaid. She was bleeding for a long time. So we took her back to the bathroom and held a cold washcloth on the cut for quite a while. Yeah, Amy hated that. Then put on a fresh bandaid. Soon after, we put her back to bed, and she did just fine. We checked on her a little more than normal, but she always seemed fine. Today she has been completely normal, and the only indication that anything went wrong is the bandaid on her forehead. I'm so glad.

I might take a picture of the cut, but I might not. I don't like looking at it - it looks deep, and it makes me sad. We're so grateful that nothing worse happened, like a concussion or the hinge hitting her eye instead of her forehead. How scary!
