98...99...100

I did it! I had a kind of goal to read 100 books in 2008. I didn't really know if I would do it. After November, when I still had 13 books to go, I didn't know if I COULD do it. But I did it! I just finished my 100th book with 2 hours and 53 minutes to spare in 2008. I did have to do a little cramming here at the end, but that was OK. I listened to a lot of books on CD this month - and throughout the year - and you can do that while working or driving. So I'm not totally unproductive.

I read lots of kinds of books, spiritual ones, fiction, fantasy, biographies, marriage/parenting help books, cheesy Mormon fiction and some non cheesy really good ones. I read at least 10 books for book clubs, our ward's book club mostly, but also a family book club and a friends' book club. (It's hard to get my stats just right as I quickly just scan over my list.) Looks like 22 were on CD. 4 or 5 books were really for kids, and others were geared more towards adolescents, but I never mind that. To be honest, I read two short, quick, easy, and delightful books in the last week so I could make it. But they count. They are significant books. I don't count Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type on my list for example. I probably read that book 100 times by itself this year. (It's Amy's favorite.)

And I often read lots of books at once. I like to have a book on CD in the car and one in the house for while I'm cleaning. I am often reading/ listening to a book with Matt. Then I have 1 or 2 I'm reading by myself. Sometimes I have a separate Sunday book when I'm not reading anything else that is OK for Sunday. I start series and then take a while to get to further books in the series. And I HATE when I find myself in line or in a waiting room without a book. That rarely happens. I've told you all this stuff before. And I also REALLY HATE spoilers.

It's too hard to pick favorites. I couldn't even pick favorites of each month. I had a spot to list my favorites each month, but I just had to like them enough in and of themselves to make the favorite list. They didn't have to beat each other out. So in a given month I could have anywhere from 1 to 6 favorites. I did gain some new favorite authors and found some series I really loved. More recommendations for books/series came from my sister, Laurel, than from any other one source and possibly from any other sources combined. I also had other family members and friends recommend books, plus book club as I have said. Sometimes it just takes one book by an author and I suddenly want to read everything they have ever written.

Here are some of my favorite author/books/series of 2008. If any of you used to read our book blog (which kind of fizzled out), you'll recognize many of these from my sister, Laurel's list of books she read in 2007 that she really liked.

Shannon Hale - pretty much love everything she's written. Mostly fantasy, a little fairy tale, and one for Jane Austen buffs.

Donald Smurthwaite - LDS writer but not cheesy. He's so good. I always felt good reading his books. I discovered him through book club and was excited to read everything I could find of his (for adults, his teen stuff looks cheesy.)

Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld - I really enjoyed reading these 4 books. They were very interesting, and I got very into them.

Chieko Okazaki - She came and spoke to our stake near the beginning of the year. So I got on a kick and read a bunch of her books. They were delightful and uplifting.

The Candy Shop War and Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull - awesome

Peter and the Starcatchers (and the next two in the series) by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson - LOVED LOVED LOVED these books. So did my sister and 9 year old nephew although I don't know that they loved them as much as I did. Peter Pan retelling. I thought they were awesome.

The Story Girl by L.M. Montgomery - delightful. I am planning on going on an L.M. Montgomery spree early this next year and reading a bunch of her books. How fun!

The Prelude to Glory series by Ron Carter - Matt and I are reading these together. So far we've read 3 of them. They are long and interesting and captivating and boring all at the same time. Sometimes we are way into them, and other times we get stuck and can't read on for a while. But overall, good.

C.S. Lewis -  I went on a C.S. Lewis kick and found out that he wrote some boring books. Who knew? Not me. I liked some of what I read and not others.

Sheri Dew - I've been listening to some of her books too. They're very good. Just finished President Hinckley's biography today and enjoyed it.

Sideways Stories from Wayside School books - In the last week I read two of these that I hadn't read before. (They were the ones that helped my finish in time.) Absolutely delightful and fun. I can't wait to read them with my kids. (I've already read one and a half of them with my husband who loves them too.)

Marriage and parenting books:
The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands by Laura Schlessinger - I thought this book was very informative. I mostly enjoyed it and appreciated the stuff I learned.
I Am A Mother by Jane Clayson Johnson - totally loved this book
Mothering with Spiritual Power by Debra Sansing Woods - another great one - inspired one of my current scripture study programs (I also have a lot of scripture study programs at a time, can't settle on one)
The Act of Marriage by Tim and Beverly LeHaye

Knocking on the Door

This is just a short soapbox kind of moment. I was just sitting here catching up on others' blogs when a friend in our ward stopped by with the Christmas present they had not been able to get to us before. I appreciate the gift and her kind wishes, but what I appreciated the most was that she thought to knock softly in case Amy was sleeping (which she is.) I thought that was so kind and thoughtful of her - and she doesn't have any kids at home anymore. She does have young grandkids though which might help her remember things like that. I love it when people knock softly. It's so sad when a perfectly good nap of Amy's (aka break time for me) is interrupted by a phone call or the doorbell. I know many other moms appreciate this too. So I just wanted to say thanks Kathy and all others who think to knock softly.

What da ya talk

Today Amy said some great things. I told her we were going to go to Grammy and Papa's house. She responded by saying Papa like five times. A few times later in the day we would say something about Papa, and Amy would have to say Papa a few times.

I told her too that later we could see Daddy so she had to say Daddy a few times.

Also, I told her something about Santa and encouraged her to say Santa. She did. It sound like Dia-da kind of. But I know she was saying Santa.

While Matt was feeding Amy tonight, she looked at the spoon and said "Yucky." (She says "ducky" more than any other word and is very clear so Matt knew she was saying yucky for real.) She immediately lunged for the food with her mouth wide. So maybe she doesn't quite understand the meaning of yucky.

Also at one point while Matt was still at work I said his name out loud. I think it might have been because he forgot something or had left something on the floor where it wasn't supposed to be. I don't know - something like that. (Just in case you were wondering why I was talking to Matt when he wasn't here.) So Amy said "Ma." Not Ma like Mama. Ma like Matt without the t's. It was awesome. She's such a smarty!

Amy in the Snow

Here's Amy's impression of snow. See for yourself what she thinks of it. Don't you love her snowsuit? She looks fat. It's hilarious. I don't know what happened in this snowsuit's other side's mitten. The one you can see that matches the suit came with it. That's what we get for buying second hand things. The other hand is sporting one of her new mittens.

I love baby footprints!

She would barely even touch the stuff.

Needless to say, we didn't last long outside. I don't like being in the cold wet snow either.

Free Baby Products

A lady in our ward (Eva Jean) called me today saying that her daughter is getting rid of some baby things that she has and wanted to know if I wanted any of them. She said everything is in great condition and not hugely used. I claimed the double stroller that she offered - we were going to be buying one soon. But we don't need any of the other things. So here's the list:

A car seat - (I don't know which kind or what the limits are. Talk to Eva Jean about that.) She said it's only slightly used and in great condition.

A play mat thing

A swing.

That's all I can remember. I think that was it. So let me know if you need any of these things, or let Eva Jean know directly. Otherwise they are going to DI. Thanks!

FHE tonight

As many know, we have a coloring wall in Amy's room that we let kids use washable crayons to draw on. For Family Home Evening tonight, we talked about families and then all went in to Amy's room to draw family pictures. We think Amy wasn't feeling too well because she didn't want to draw and was a bit fussy all evening. Plus, she was rubbing her eyes ever since she woke up from her nap (around 4 or 5 I think). So she didn't get too into drawing on the wall tonight, but below are the results. As you can see, we both accounted for "Polar Bear" (our next child).

As you can see, our artistic talents are very well developed. I'm thinking about submitting some of our work to many major magazines.

And here's all of us!

Happy Birthday to Me

Last Sunday was my birthday (not yesterday, but the week before.) We had a fun day - after I got over my grumpy I'm-late-to-church-and-Amy-won't-let-me-stay-in-the-meetings-anyway-because-she-can't-ever-sit-still complex. I was just being a grump. We left our ward soon after priesthood/ Relief Society started to go to our great niece's baby blessing. That was fun to see family and meet Talya and enjoy yummy food. It was also fun to be with Jack and Bentley as it was their birthdays too. After enjoying yummy food at JC and Shalee's house we went to see Ty and Abby's new house. It was fun to hang out with them a while, and their house is awesome.

That evening, we went to my parents' house for a late dinner and watching the Christmas devotional. Then we stayed and played games for a while and had a great time with that. My mom and Amy and I ended up playing WAY too late. I think we were in trouble for not putting Amy to bed. We finally left at 11, and Amy was still up. I'd say that's past bed time. But Amy was being too cute to put to bed. She started saying "Aa-my" to mean Grammy. My mom was delighted of course. What a great time!

But my favorite part of my birthday came a few days later - in the mail. Matt's present! See for yourself. (And all you ladies who are or ever have been pregnant - also known as the people who would understand how wonderful this gift is - feel free to drool.)

So they aren't my favorite pictures of myself, but I guess it does give you the best idea of the intended use and also the wonderfulness of the present. So I will show you:

Dancing Queen

Here's Amy dancing to the demo music on our piano. I think she's adorable.

Write Your Own Caption

I just thought the following pictures needed captions. Any suggestions? Nancy, you're really good at this so if you have any ideas, I want to hear. I always love the things Rachel "says" in her pictures. I'm expecting funny/ goofy ideas from Matt too.

Why Amy had a Brownie for Breakfast

This morning after nursing, Amy wandered off by herself to the front room. I was still reading in her room so I didn't follow. Matt was in the front room at the time so I knew she'd be fine. A little later Matt joined me in Amy's room, and we talked for a little while. I asked if Amy was safe in the front room by herself. (She generally is, but if the chairs are not turned over she can climb on them. If the chairs are too close to other furniture, she can then climb on the other furniture too. And she LOVES the computers. So that was my biggest concern for where she'd climb.) Matt said the chair by the computer desk was turned over although he wasn't sure about the others. I guess that shouldn't have been good enough for us. A few minutes later, when I went to the front room, Amy was like this:

She had found a brownie (thank you to whoever left treats at our door last night) and helped herself. By the time we found her, the brownie was almost gone. She was a mess, a very happy mess. We just laughed. That's what we get for assuming she's ok. I am just grateful she was safe up there on that table. We gotta be more careful.

Our New Van!!!

So I alluded to it in a post I just put up, but Matt reminded me that I never posted about us buying our new van. On Halloween, our car died. Kicked the bucket. Was totally gone. The next day we started car shopping. We knew this was coming soon for us, and had been specifically saving up for it for a couple of months, but it suddenly became high priority for us to find a new vehicle.

Neither of us had ever bought a vehicle before, thanks to our generous parents who let us borrow or go with out, and Matt's parents gave us a car when we got married. That was so helpful! So we've never needed to go through this process until now. So the day after Halloween, we started looking. I called my sister, Laurel who has done her homework with car shopping. We were looking for a sedan or a minivan. We could get a sedan to be cheaper, and so it was what we focused our shopping on.

However, that night we found a minivan that seemed too good to pass up. It was a 2000 Toyota Sienna (one of the two minivans that Laurel said were the best and the only kinds she'll ever buy.) We found it from a small dealer who wasn't trying to push it like lots of dealers do - I can't stand going to dealers because of that. It was a great price for what we were getting, though quite a bit more than we planned on spending. But we were so excited.

He gave us until Monday or Tuesday to get back to him with the money and to sign the contract as long as we called him Monday morning to say we were still in. Well, Monday morning (after thinking and praying Sunday about it) we assessed our finances and realized it really was more than we wanted to spend on a vehicle. So we declined.

The hardest part about it was that we needed to continue shopping. I kept looking for cars on ksl.com, and we test drove probably 8 throughout the week, mostly Tuesday when Matt took the day off just to car shop. By Thursday it was down to 2 for us, a Honda something - I don't remember anymore - and a Dodge Caravan. I wanted the car; Matt wanted the van. I just thought the van needed too much work and wasn't worth it. Then I called and found out that the car was already sold. That left us with the van or nothing. Still, I convinced Matt that that van was not the right one for us. He was really sad about that, but he thought that if either of us really didn't want to get a certain vehicle, we shouldn't get it.

So back to square one again. Friday I expanded my search to include the Salt Lake area and focused on minivans. I realized from our experience with the Caravan that Matt REALLY wanted to get a van. He just is more comfortable in them. (Matt has long legs. ) We would be getting a van before too long anyway when we outgrow a car - not for a few years, but still not THAT long either. We decided to just go ahead and get one now. Then later, when we decide we want a second car of our own - we're borrowing Matt's parents' truck while they are on a mission - we'll buy a car.

I found a Sienna and a Honda Odyssey that were in our price ranges that looked good. We especially liked the Odyssey. I called the Sienna's owner, and she was out of town. I told her we'd test drive it when she was back in town if we didn't get the other car we were looking into. We were both so sick of test driving and deciding - I know, it had only been a week - that we both really hoped to get the Odyssey. So we went up to Salt Lake and test drove it. We took it straight to Firestone to have it checked out - make sure everything worked. The poor owner was sick that day and still took great care of us. The van had a few minor problems, but we weren't concerned. We brought it back and went to my mom's to decide how to proceed. We prayed and discussed and looked at finances, checked out edmunds.com to check the worth of the fan, etc. and decided to make an offer. The owner accepted our offer and let us drive away in the van that night. We were so excited!

After that we still had a little trouble because we couldn't get the title right away - we still don't have it - and couldn't drive it without the previous owner being liable. But we got all that worked out. It's temporarily registered under our names - will be permanently when we get the title. And it's on our insurance. So we're all legal. We love having our van! The payment went through, and things are pretty well set. It's very roomy and easy to drive. I love the space in the back - lots of storage area. And Amy thinks it is one of the best places ever to play. Our only problem so far is figuring out parking. We're just not used to it yet in such a big vehicle. But we'll get there.

So that's the story of our van. And here are the pictures:

Christmas in November

I know some of you think this is blasphemous, but we like to put up Christmas decorations as early as possible. For FHE a few weeks ago (a while before Thanksgiving) we put up our Christmas tree and got out our nativity set that Aunt Salli gave to Amy last year. And Amy found a new favorite toy among our Christmas things:

We're goin to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo

How about you, you, you?
You can come too, too, too
We're goin to the zoo, zoo, zoo

I had that song stuck in my head all morning the day we went to the zoo. Here are a few more pictures.

Amy is a pro at saying ducky now. So we had fun talking about and to the duckies.

The Zoo

OK, time to catch up the blog again. The Friday before Thanksgiving, Amy and I went with our friends the Catanzaros to the zoo. I was excited about my first outing in the van (besides when Matt and I have gone up to SL in it.) We had a good time, but our toddlers didn't love it as much as we had hoped they would. Joseph was tired. Amy was cold and very unhappy about having to spend so much time in the stroller. But she won't walk where she's supposed to when I let her walk. That's the problem.

I was grateful to feel well though, and we did have a good time together.

Amy's favorite kinds of animals seem to be relatively small ones - we know she loves dogs and cats of all sizes - that move around a lot. Her favorite - as you can tell by the look on her face were these goldish monkeys. She loved them.

Do you ever feel like you go to the doctor a lot when you have kids?

I think the frequency will just keep increasing. Lately we haven't gone too often. Amy's only ever been to the doctor once besides her regular well-baby visits. That's a blessing. As it happened, though, we both had turns with our doctors yesterday. Amy's 15 month appointment, and my regular 4 week pregnancy check-up. But as pregnancy continues, my appointments will be more frequent, and newborns sure get checked a lot. I just appreciate that we get so many reassurances that our kids are doing well.

I won't give all the stats in case anyone finds them boring. I can never remember them long anyway. The great part is that Amy finally jumped above 20 pounds. I just read on a friend's blog yesterday that her baby was 20 pounds at 6 months. Whoa! Amy's 2 1/2 times that old! And last month when we took her to the doctor, she still wasn't quite there. Now she's 21 pounds and a little. We are going to celebrate this weight gain by buying her a front facing car seat. She's getting more and more sick of being put in her car seat, and we hope that will help.

The bad news is Amy's appointment took an hour and a half, and we barely made it to mine. The good news is that we were in and out of mine in half and hour.

Amy got shots, but she only cried for about a minute. She's so brave.

We heard our baby's heart beat. He/She is doing fine. I love that!

And Matt only worked a half day yesterday - he said it was too hard to put in a full day after a long weekend off. I was just glad to have him around. So he met us at my appointment, and then we went out to lunch. So fun! Then we went to Wall-E for FHE activity since he was home early enough. We liked it, what we saw. Matt spent at least half of the movie in the hall with Amy which was frustrating for him. She just doesn't like to sit still no matter where we are.

So that was our fun day!

Update

Thanksgiving was wonderful! Wednesday Matt got sent home from work early - just what we were hoping. When he got home, Ryan (my brother) and Melissa (his girlfriend) were at our house watching Amy while I was visiting teaching. So Matt brought them over to Cernys' (my cousins) to begin playing. When I saw they weren't home, I headed to Cernys' too. Little did I know, Matt and Amy had just dropped them off and then returned home. I decided to stay at Cernys' anyway. They stayed home quite a while, and I have to admit I appreciated being able to play/ rest without worrying about Amy. We played a lot that day, then Ryan and Melissa slept over - with Ryan in Amy's room.

Thursday the boys were anxious to play outside so we got up and got ready earlier than I would have liked - we left our house at 9:30. It was a holiday! It still took quite a while to round up enough people for the annual ultimate frisbee/ football playing. In the meantime, Matt and I went to walmart while Amy played at Cernys'. So fun to go to the store just us. That is rare.

Everyone had a good time playing from what I heard. James even scored a touchdown so they say. James is 3. In the meantime, those of us not playing outside were playing inside. That's what we do on holidays. And we continued to do that all day. My aunt Anne had rigged up a concoction with couches and chairs to block the toddlers in and let them play. It was awesome. The stairs at their house are scary so we were always on our gaurd to not let any babies get to them. It was fun for a while, but imagine Amy's delight when she got out and showed Finn how to as well. She was not content to play in there anymore.

Dinner was delicious. Lots of the women worked so hard on it. And Matt helped get everything set up. John is amazing at clean up. So it wasn't just the women. Andy (my brother) had convinced everyone to make up an Armstrong/ Cerny trivia game. We all wrote questions down and read them during dinner. We were all laughing pretty hard. It was great!

After dinner - clean up and more games. The kids were adorable. They dressed up and sang some songs. They were pilgrims, indians, and turkeys.

As usual we kept playing quite late (by my pregnancy, have a kid standards.) We put Amy to bed in a pack n play so that Matt and I could just play. Unfortunately, everyone was starting to get tired and either loopy or grumpy. So it wasn't the best part of the day. But all in all, it was a wonderful day.

Friday Matt and I had a wonderful day trying to get things done. We enjoyed spending the whole day together. This was especially nice because I have been SO grumpy lately. Not constantly, but way more often then usual. I take little things harder than I usually would and get annoyed with people really fast. Some days, I am just depressed. This is not normal, and I honestly completely blame pregnancy hormones. I often do not do well with pressure these days. I'm not taking about major life stresses. I don't really have many of those - my life is pretty calm. I'm talking make dinner or a couple of phone calls pressure. I can't have an extensive to-do list or I'll meltdown. It's a little rediculous. But that's what I'm fighting these days. I'm hoping all these tired/ sick/ emotional symptoms will start to die down now that I'm almost 14 weeks. I love second trimester! I think I have had more energy - I made it great through the busy weekend. And I haven't been as sick the last few days. (Although I did throw up last week for my first time in either pregnancy.) So I think things are looking up.

Anyway, Saturday morning Matt played football with the ward elders. We had a little practice run-through for our Fifth-Sunday presentation which we took a part in yesterday. It was a good thing we did the run through Saturday to make sure technology worked. Then we took one hour to speed clean the house - we had both already done a lot of the cleaning, but I wanted it finished for Sunday. Then off to my parents'.

I had decided that I hadn't gotten enough playing for the week yet so we went to play some more. That was fun. My dad even took time to play with us some more.

That night we went to a mission companion's (of mine) wedding reception. I have to admit, it was disappointing to be there. It was loud (they had a band) and crazy. And not a great environment. I didn't even get a chance to say hello to the bride. I hope she knows we made it as we left a gift and that she knows I love her.

Sunday was crazy!!! Matt left at 6:30 for meetings, same as usual, and I got up right after he left. I had so much to do. I put dinner in the crock pot before church and got everything ready for nursery singing time and last minute work for the presentation. Plus getting Amy and me ready for church and cleaning up the clutter from the night before/ that morning. Even with 2 1/2 hours to get ready, we still barely made it on time for church.

Church was great! We had a musical testimony meeting for Sacrament Meeting. Anyone who wanted came up and bore their testimony about a hymn and had the congregation sing a couple verses of it. It was refreshing and enjoyable to feel like I was fully participating in Sacrament Meeting even with Amy trying to escape.

Our presentation went well. It was about budgeting and food storage. We talked about what we are doing in our family to build up our 3 month supply of food.

After church was choir practice which also went quite well. I'm excited for our Christmas program in two weeks - and excited for when it is done. It is a lot of work for me because I am in charge of it. I think it will go well though. That evening (after a nice nap for me) we hosted dinner group at our house with some ward members. It was fun to have them over, but by the end of the night I was sure exhausted. What a day and what a weekend!

(Sorry if you were bored reading this. I probably gave way more details then you wanted.)

Garfield

Well, I have an announcement to make. I believe I have officially read every Garfield that has been published since the comic began. Since 19-Jun-1978 through today, 26-Nov-2008; over 30 years worth of comics. Now the question... is it worth being proud of? Or should I not be admitting this?! Anyway, it's a great comic! It took me about a year and a half to actually read them all. And now I only need follow it day by day - not a problem. =)

My Little Darling

Amy's done a few things today that are incredibly endearing.

1. After Amy's afternoon nap, she stayed in her crib talking to herself. It's adorable! And it's so nice that she doesn't just start crying. She's become a dream child about sleeping - pun kind of intended. She goes to sleep with her blanket, a bear, and her bottle and not a peep. (Today I added her book for one more b word.) Nap time and bedtime it's the same. She goes to sleep so easy these days. I love it! And she's been waking up happy - just talking away more and more lately.

2. We went swimming, and Amy was really fun. She was a bit more brave and enjoyed walking and climbing on the steps. I'm glad we went.

3. Amy and I just took a bath together to clean up the chlorine. She picked up one of her duckies and said "ducky." She's been able to say it and has known what it means for a while, but I think that was the first time she just picked one up and identified it. She did it with two more duckies, including a picture of a ducky on our shower curtain. That one especially impressed me! She's awesome.

4. I was most impressed when Amy decided to wash herself. She had just seen me use the soap and wash my tummy. So she touched the top of her body wash container, rubbed her hands together, then rubbed her hands on her tummy (which happens to stick out like mine, though her's is more drastic for now.) She did it over and over. It was so cute! She was obviously trying to copy what I had done.

5. While I was video chatting with my sister, Amy got on my lap and started pushing buttons on the computer. So I put her down which made her mad. I had to distract her. So I gave her a bag of cookies that someone gave us. It was tied shut. I thought she would like to carry it around and touch the bag. I was right. A few minutes later, Amy walked back in the room carrying about 5 cookies between her two hands. I figured she'd be able to do that. It was so cute and charming that she pulled it off. Of course I didn't have the heart to take them away. She really hasn't seemed to get too many pieces of cookie in her mouth. She keeps playing with them and throwing them on the floor. So I'll clean up her mess later. It's more important to have fun being a kid than to have a clean house. That's what I think.

I love Amy!!!

I wanna do some tags

So I was just thinking about getting up - I always lie down when Amy goes down for a nap whether I'm tired or not because I've been low on energy lately. I just don't want to push myself. Maybe I would doing something productive. Then I read Heather's blog. She had fun tags that I wanted to do. So I'm doing them instead of working.

Matt's in blue

High School Memories Tag

1. Did you date someone from your school? Yes. I had two boyfriends in high school - one for five months and one for 1 year nine months. So that took up most of my high school dating years. Despite my best efforts, no.

2. What kind of car did you drive? A dodge neon. Although I shouldn't have driven to school so much. We lived 2 blocks away and then moved to 5 blocks away. I was lazy. A 1975 yellow ford ranger with rust around the tires.

3. Were you a party animal? In a way. I had my group of friends, and we loved playing together. But our parties were usually game nights, movies, or temple walks and porch sits. (I lived/ worked in a bed and breakfast, and we had an AWESOME porch.) No. Just, no.

4. Were you considered a flirt? by everyone who knew me. I was out of control. More... awkward. Don't think I didn't try though!

5. Were you in band, orchestra or choir? Yes, yes, and yes. I loved all three. No, no, and no. Boy did I miss out!

6. Were you a nerd? No question. Senior year I was captain of the math team. Despite my best efforts, I'm afraid so.

7. Were you on any varsity teams? no way. no athletic ability here. Diving and Ballroom Dance teams. There weren't enough to have 'varsity' or any such categories. Probably why I was able to get on them!

8. Did you get suspended/expelled? no. I was good. No. I think that would have mortified me.

9. Can you still sing the fight song? never knew the fight song, but I can still sing part of our school song. I had an embarrassing amount of school spirit and had lots of fun displaying it. That and the pep band made sporting events enjoyable for me. Otherwise I would have hated them. Bont, I'm pretty sure your school song *is* your fight song, hon. At least ours was. And no, I can't still sing it. But I do still know some cool high school cheers! Actually, our school song and our fight song were different. I know. I played them both on my big bari sax. MHS Forever was the name of our school song, and I knew all the words to both versus. The fight song I could just play. Don't know if we had words or not.

10. Who were your favorite teachers? my band director - Mrs. Whitaker. Band was one of my favorite things. Mrs. Walter. Was, is, and likely will be 'till I die.

15. What do you remember most about graduation? I think that it felt weird to be done. Nothing sticks out about the ceremony and the graduation party wasn't really that great. Overall, I think I'm about the same size as I was in high school, when I'm not pregnant. I couldn't gain weight if I ate a pint of Ben & Jerry's every day for 2 months straight. I know! I've tried it!

I couldn't go to my 5 - I was out of town. This year was my 10th - I forgot about it. My track record is pretty poor, but I wouldn't mind going.

Dating and Parents

I'm sure my parents asked me many questions about Bonnie while we were dating, yet I can't pick out any single one from my memory. Given the example below, I think that may be a very, very good thing.

Maxwellisms

I'm reading a great book called Whom the Lord Loveth by Elder Neal A. Maxwell. I love him. As most of you probably know, Elder Maxwell has some great phrases that he comes up with. And because I enjoy them so much, I decided that as I read the book, I would just list some of the cool quotes for you to all enjoy:

"There is no footnote to the second commandment indicating exemptions are available in meeting [life's] vexations."

"Meekness and trust in God make possible the sincere utterance, 'it mattereth not.' It is a spiritual posture that is knee-bending, not shoulder-shrugging."

"When we seek to stand against the surf of sin, however, let us do so without being puffed up, lest, being bloated, we ourselves are more easily carried away by the current."

Thanks, Marjorie, for letting me borrow this book. (Even though I know Marjorie will never read my blog. She doesn't have a computer. But she does have great books. Works for me.)

Aaa-my

Amy just started saying a word a few minutes ago that I don't think I've heard from her. It's aaa-my. I don't know how to write things phonetically. It's the a sound at the beginning of abra-cadabra. aaa-my. I think she's trying to say her name, but I'm not sure. Cute!

As a said not about Amy and her name, there are some cute kids in our ward that like Amy. That makes me happy. One is our friend, Maddie. Whenever she sees Amy now she says, "Hi, Amy" and usually says it a few times. I think she even calls me "Hi, Amy" if she condescends to talk to me. (She's a lot more interested in Amy than me.) Also, Mariah likes Amy a lot. For a long time she called Amy and me "Amy." I get called Amy fairly often, but Mariah would ONLY call me Amy. After a while when she would say it, I would ask her what my name really was and remind her it's really Bonnie. Now she calls me Bonnie and Amy Amy. Go Mariah! I'm just glad Amy and I have so many little friends.

Oh, and today I got a ride home from church with Jason and Maria. When I was pulling my sleeping baby out of the car (still in her car seat), Rudy grabbed the seat and didn't let go. He wanted Amy to stay with him. Yay for having a kid with friends!

Tricky Tricky

Here's an ok video of Amy doing her tricks. Sometimes she just won't do it for the camera. The cutest part is that when we watched the video to see if I should post it, Amy did all her tricks better than she actually did in the video.

Happy Halloween

Halloween festivities continued (see below for pre-Halloween Halloween activities) with a party at Matt's work. Some of the people there go all out with decorations. There are a few little haunted(ish) areas to walk through. And bowls of candy everywhere to trick or treat in. So it didn't take Amy too long to figure out that when we got to a bowl of candy she could just reach in and grab a piece (or two or three or however many she could fit in her little hands.) She loved that part. The part she didn't love was that we seemed to keep thinking that she should put her candy in her bag. When we would take it away, she would cry. So we just had to wait until she put a piece of candy down in order to pick up another piece. Then we would sneak the candy that she put down and put it in the bag. Overall, she loved it. Here she is sitting down to play with her candy. She thought she had new toys. She loved carrying candy around over the next few days, often in her mouth with the wrapper still on.

That evening (after our car breathed it's last breath - more about that later) Amy and I went trick or treating while Matt stayed home and handed out candy. We were both lady bugs, and my costume only really made sense when I was with Amy. Again, she liked getting the candy from the bowls. But she didn't like having to be carried between the houses and have to wait so long to get more candy. So that was our Halloween. I must admit, Amy looked cute in her costume. We didn't take any family pictures - whoops. Matt was a monk in case you wanted to know.

My Model (read: hair-doing guniea pig)

I love doing Amy's hair. I never thought I'd get so into it because I'm not so girly. I really don't have a lot of variety to what I do with my hair. But its just so fun to do her up in lots of cute ways.

See:

(Love that pose.)

For Halloween Amy was a lady bug. (I'll post more pictures/ give the update of that in a minute.) She didn't like wearing her hat so I had to put her hair in pony tails so that I could bobby pin her hat on. Her hair won't all go in one pony tail (too short and thin) so I put it in six. Here's Amy in the tub after having her hair up in 6 pony tails and under her hat for much of the day:

Holy Cow!

My child can eat!

Amy likes eating a lot. She had her grandparents convinced that we never feed her at home since she ate so much at every meal when we visited them in August.

After Amy's nap today I tried to nurse her - just like after every nap. She wouldn't nurse. Even when we tried switching sides. (That sometimes helps.) She never just won't nurse. It was so wierd. Luckily I bought her some whole milk yesterday. So I gave her a bottle of that. (5 oz probably.)

Then we had lunch. A peanut-butter and jelly sandwich. She ate the whole thing minus the crusts. And she took it apart and tried to lick the jelly off. How do all kids instinctively know how to do this kind of thing?

Then I gave her a handful of crackers. She was clearly not done eating.

That's ok. I had been wanting to share some cottage cheese with her. We both love cottage cheese, and it was really cheep yesterday so I got some. I usually only buy cottage cheese when I am planning on making lasagna - and then we sometimes eat some plain anyway.

So we were taking turns having bites. Amy didn't mind that I was in charge of feeding her, only that I would take bites in between her bites. She didn't want to wait that long. So I finally let her feed herself. She licked the bowl clean - well she tried to. I literally saw her pick up the bowl to lick it. So I gave her some more. She had the equivalent of about 2 servings of cottage cheese, maybe more by the time she was done. And when I was wiping her hands clean, she used her free hand to lift her bib to her mouth to eat what had fallen there.

Then I gave her another bottle of milk. I swear she would eat all day if I would keep handing her good food. At least she likes a good variety of things.

Between PB&J and cottage cheese - feeding herself - she was quite messy when she was done. So here's Amy with her Santa Clause goatee:

That last picture is especially amazing in my opinion.

Well, I'm glad this gave me something to get me out of my blogging rut. It's not that I didn't have anything to blog about. (We just had Halloween.) I just didn't have time right away and then never found myself getting around to it. Maybe I should add a few more posts while I'm at it.

Election Time

Is anyone else sick of talking/ studying about politics? I find it very boring. That's beside the point.

I have been studying the issues and the candidates for a while and have realized that third party is the way to go for me. Matt feels the same way. So then the question was, which third party candidate.

I've studied them all and compared their stances on individual issues. For the most part, I think many of the third party candidates are more closely aligned with each other and so there are a few that I would be happy to support, way before McCain or Obama.

I have mostly been debating between Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party and Bob Barr of the Libertarian party. They both seem like good candidates. I plan to vote for Bob Barr (unless I change my mind by tomorrow) because he seems to be even more emphatic about the principle of getting the government out of many issues that the government doesn't belong in in the first place. I think that's very important. However, I really like the principles behind the Constitution Party as far as I have learned about them. I think either candidate would do WAY better than McCain or Obama.

There are many who argue that a third party candidate vote is a wasted vote. I disagree. While I do not believe there is any chance that a third party candidate will be president, I think the mentality and the system needs to change to include more (and often better) choices.

This isn't some professionally studied or written post. I am not offended if you don't agree with me. I just wanted to put the idea out there that there really are more choices in the vote than the Republicans and Democrats.

Fun Family Halloween Activity

Matt and I took Amy to this last night. It was fun for all of us. Nothing SUPER special, but it was cute. Amy had a look on her face during the train ride that was half nervous and half curious the whole time. Very cute. These people go to lots of trouble to do this, and it was fun. Anyone's welcome to go. Enjoy!
