Family Photo

One thing that I didn't mention that we did in December is a combined little birthday thing for me and our friends, the Rowens. Their daughter turned 1. So we went to Chuck E. Cheese. These are some pictures of our family we got that day. Help! I don't know how to make them not be upside down.

Amy Sat Up!

It's true. Amy sat up today all by herself. And she stayed up for quite a while. It was while we were at Matt's church ball game. They were warming up so I called for him to look at her. We are so excited by our big girl. She still is quite tippy and will probably need help getting in the right position to stay up, but we know she can keep herself that way at least for a while. Yay Amy!

Brainwashing

I needed to get out of the house tonight and take a little break. So we went to the library. I know some of you are probably thinking "Is that the best they can do?" but I love the library. Besides, we can't go anywhere for too long spontaneously; there just isn't that much time between Matt getting home from work and Amy's bed time. Plus our budget usually doesn't allow too many spontaneous events at the end of the month. OK, I am totally rambling. So anyway, we went to the library. Before we left, when Amy was in her car seat I asked her if she wanted to go to the library. She nodded! I'm not kidding. My 5 month old baby nodded at me. Granted, it was small and subtle, but it was there. I was so proud. I laughed and told Matt. I was so excited. I told him I fully intended to brainwash our children into loving the library just like my mom brainwashed me when I was a kid. It's her fault I love the library so much. Thanks, Mom!

President Hinckley

Last night when I heard that President Hinckley died, I called family members to mourn together and pay tribute. I wanted an opportunity to pay tribute here as well. He is an inspiration to me because of all the things he did. Even more importantly, I appreciate the person he became. Like Nancy, I will miss seeing him and hearing from him in Conference. I appreciate his optimism. It gave me confidence. I will certainly miss him. My sister told me about this conference talk which I haven't read yet but will soon. Apparently, he challenged Elder Nelson to a duel for giving this talk and then later repented of the challenge. So funny! I'd love to hear what all of you have to say.

Happy Birthday Matt!

Today is Matt's birthday. Yippee for him! He's 27 today. He's at work right now, but tonight we are going to celebrate by having the dinner he picked (a frozen skillet dinner thing, super easy which is fine with me). He also has ward basketball practice tonight. Besides that we are probably going to spend a lot of time reading Harry Potter 7. We are 500ish pages into it. It's very exciting. Matt, I hope you have a wonderful birthday. I love you.

4 Months!

Amy turned 4 months old on New Year's Eve. We went to her well baby check up last Friday. She's healthy. (I think those visits to the doctor are well worth it - just like prenatal visits - just for the reassurance that your baby is healthy.) She got 5 shots plus the immunization that she drinks - and I mean drinks, she was chugging that thing. The nurse said most babies don't do that. She got over the shots a lot quicker than I did (as usual). I took her straight out to the waiting room without getting her dressed again and fed her. I put her in her stroller, and she promptly fell asleep for the next 3 hours or something crazy like that. Even moving her from her stroller to her car seat didn't bug her. So the stats: 13 lbs. 2 oz. - 29%; head circumference - 41 cm - 42%; 25.8 in. - 90%. So it appears that our baby would be abnormally skinny due to the relatively low weight but still extraordinary length. She certainly isn't one of those super chubby babies, but if Amy (who does have a few fat rolls) is abnormally skinny, I want to see a relatively chubby baby. (Actually I have seen quite chubby babies. My siblings' babies are usually quite chubby although the parents are not.) Even babies of average weight and height must be pretty chubby. How cute!

AMY'S TRICK!!!!!

This is the progression up to Amy's latest trick.

First she liked to arch her back to reach things.

She loves her mirror.

Then she pulled this off:

And finally . . .

The first video was taken Friday the 4th. On Sunday the 6th, Amy was sleeping on her side. (I put her that way because I was feeding her when she fell asleep.) After she woke up, she rolled the rest of the way onto her stomach. Since she had already shown that she could roll from her back to her side, we counted it that day. I thought she wanted to keep practicing so I moved her to the middle of the bed on her stomach. She flipped right onto her back. I was so surprised. But I think that was on accident, from the momentum of me moving her. She hasn't gone stomach to back since. But she rolls from her back to her stomach all the time now. Go Amy!

Cute Amy moments

We propped Amy up against pillows so that she could see the TV and turned on the Veggie Tales movie she got for Christmas. She was looking really cute all propped up so we got out the camera. Look at this great shot we got!

Amy got my finger with her toe. I thought it was cute. I don't know why this is underlining.

We went to get Amy after a nap. She went to sleep with her swaddle blanket in her crib but not wrapped around her. This is what she did with it. (Thanks to Matt for getting her to show that beautiful smile in this picture.)

This is how Amy fell asleep the other day.

Highlights of December 2007 - Part 1

So I haven't posted for over a month. December was so busy (for everyone, I know) that I didn't get around to posting. By the time I had a second, there were too many things that had happened to know where to start. So I didn't post anything. Now it's time to catch up. So here is a summary of December:

Birthday - On my birthday we went to the Ashby annual Christmas party (they are in our ward) and then to Matt's work party. We had a nice formal dinner and got a complimentary professional family picture taken. Matt won speakers for his ipod but decided to trade them for a basket full of 5 games and 3 puzzle things plus some treats. We were totally excited about that prize.

These are pictures of Amy in her Christmas dress from her grandma. This is what she wore to the parties.

The next morning Matt surprised me by having lots and lots of our friends come over for a little birthday party. He had been planning it for quite a while. He even had all sorts of stuff to feed everybody pancakes. He asked everyone to not bring formal gifts, just some sort of rubber duckie thing. So I now have lots more fun toys. What a fun time!

Pictures of the duckies! Look how many I got! Jason and Maria Drummond (friends in the ward) brought a rice crispie treat duckie. It was so cute and creative and so yummy.

Sunday the 9th we went to Matt's parents' ward to hear them speak before they left for the MTC the next day. They are now in Australia. They came over a few times in the evenings during their week in the MTC including the day they took off. That's sure different than when I was in the MTC. They got their evenings free. It's fun to hear about their experiences already. Like the cool fireworks show they were able to see for New Years. I know fireworks on New Years sounds a little wierd, but it's summer there.

When we were up north for their Sacrament Meeting we got to go to our friend, Shelby's wedding reception and spend the night at Lori and Marc's (more friends of ours) condo. They were so nice to have us! What a fun time!

Monday the 10th my mom took me birthday/ Christmas shopping. We ran into Melanie Parks and her kids (my sister-in-law) who had just gotten pictures with Santa. They looked very cute. Amy got her picture with Santa right after we ran into them. Neither Santa or Amy were very smiley, but that's OK.

This is a cute video of Amy that happened sometime in the week of December 10 - 16. I don't know, but I know when the pictures before and after this were taken.

For Family Home Evening on the 17th, we joined the Schaefermeyers for Christmas caroling some neighbors. We bundled Amy up, and Matt carried her in the little backpack carrier thing under his coat so she would stay warm.

Ward Christmas program - I worked a lot last month on putting together the Sacrament program for the Sunday before Christmas. I just was called as the ward music chair towards the end of November, so I had a short time to do it. People in my ward were so helpful and willing to participate. I think it turned out great because of the wonderful people who were participating. Nancy gave a great analysis of it on her blog. The post is called "Christmas Adam." There are still a lot of things to do in the calling before I'm really in the routine of it (some new callings, etc.) But it's a lot less stress now that the Christmas program is done. I am just grateful for how much the Lord blessed me and helped me with putting it together. We sang "Praise to the Man" as the closing hymn in honor of Joseph's Smith's birthday. When I sang "Sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven" I started bawling because I was so touched at how true that was in this experience for me. I gave a little time and effort and thought and prayer, and the Lord blessed me and the other members of the ward by pouring out his Spirit in great abundance on our Christmas program. I felt like the whole day lent itself to worship, and I am grateful.

Here are a few random moments at home that were very enjoyable. Amy had a lot to say that day but reserved most of it for off camera.

Sunday the 23rd we went up to my mom's house to hang out with my sister, Laurel's family. They came into town on the 18th. I played with them during the week, soon after they came, but this was the first time Matt got to see them on their trip. It was very fun to be with them and for Amy to meet some cousins she had never met. Her cousins liked her very much. Tyler, Malia, and Aly all told me that they thought Amy was cute. Lillianne probably would have said so too, but that's a little sophisticated for her. (She's 14 months old.) That Sunday night was really fun playing with the fam. Aly (4-years-old) wanted to sing a song in Spanish, so she made one up called "Hola bi-ti-bi-ti I love my mother." It was great. I tried to catch it on video and got it a little. She wanted everyone to sing with her, but we obviously didn't know the words. She got mad that we were all laughing and that we weren't singing it right. Very cute.

Christmas Eve - We enjoyed being at home together. I love it when Matt has the day off. We worked on getting the house cleaned up so we could enjoy a clean house on Christmas. I honestly don't remember what else, just things we needed to get done. We did open one present each that night. Matt gave me The Field of Dreams. I love that movie. I gave Matt new gloves. He lost last year's. That night we had Family Home Evening about Christmas. I decided that for lesson we should read a little out of the December Friend and then share our testimonies of the Savior with Amy. I felt close to the Lord and enjoyed His spirit as we did this despite the fact that Amy started screaming soon after I started sharing my testimony. So it goes. We went to bed only for me to get up in the night and go put Matt's stocking out in the living room. (I had already filled it when I wrapped his presents, and I didn't want Matt even guessing about the things in it.)

Christmas - Amy let us sleep in. Yippee! I got up first and made corn bread. (Matt's mom's recipe. He loves it.) He had said the night before that he was going to make it for breakfast, but I didn't give him the chance because I woke up first. I also insisted on showering and taking out the trash before we started. Finally Matt had had it. (I hadn't even let him go out to where his stocking was.) So we went out to the living room and had Amy open presents and then had breakfast. We wanted Amy to participate and enjoy opening presents, so we did that before we ate while she was in a good mood. Good thing too because she got upset while we ate. Amy got a new book, a movie (Veggie Tales. God Made You Special), a little people nativity scene from her cousins and a hamper shaped like a pelican like the one the Drummonds have. I gave Matt the first installment of The Twelve Dates of 2008. There were 6 little gifts that represented dates we would go on in 2008. He loved it! Yay! Matt partially wrapped a huge box that had more, smaller boxes inside. It took a while to get down to the actual presents (a CD of The Secret Garden (the musical) and a Stargirl journal. Stargirl is a book that has significance in our family. We love it for one thing. And I have a cousin who named herself Stargirl after reading the book. This journal has quotes in it from the book and its sequel.) Then we watched Field of Dreams. That afternoon we worked on the very involved dinner that Matt requested for his Christmas meal. My parents and brother, Scott joined us. We finished off the night playing games as Armstrongs usually do.

Wednesday the 26th. Matt went back to work. I was going to stay home, but I couldn't resist going back to my mom's. So I finally left after locking myself out (with Amy thank goodness) and waiting for Matt to come home from work and let me back in to get my keys). I didn't tell anyone I was coming, just showed up. We hung out all day and had a great time. That night my brother, Andy came down with his family including his in-laws. One of his sisters-in-law, Natalie, was going to the airport the next night so she spent the night at my mom's too. Laurel, Scott, Natalie and I stayed up way too late talking. What a blast! The next day was the royalty party. My mom likes throwing royalty parties for lots of small kids in our family. Tons of people ended up coming. There's a talent show, story time, singing, pictures, and a royal procession. Everyone comes in announced as Princess (or Prince) (their name), the (adjective). Like Amy was Princess Amy the Lovely. What a fun mom I have! Here is how some of how she described the time we spent together while Laurel's family was in town: (We had to miss Finn's blessing because it was the same day as the Christmas program.)

*We went to Logan for Finn's blessing. saturday: Andy has a new electric guitar with microphone. Richard sang his traditional "O Holy Night" with guitar this year. James sang, told jokes, and fielded responses from the audience. (the boy is two!) Ryan Scott did his standup comedy and I told my Sam and the Greenbean man. Nita's family was with...twas funny to see the 2 grandpas doing interpretive dance to Andy's piano music. Yummy food with Nita, her mom, and sisters in the kitchen. Since Andy was playing the piano for the Christmas choir, he recruited some family to sing along. James broke away from his mom and was determined to "help" his Dad play the organ for "I heard the Bells". I took James out. He broke free of me and ran down the aisle, determined to get to his Dad. I RAN after him, made a grab and missed. I finally caught him just as he reached the stairs. So that is the first time I've RUN in church.

*Royalty party. Christmas Eve for us was the. 27th. (kids went with inlaws on 25th). Royalty party included playing instruments, being introduced from the "Royal Road" (long piece of yellow fabric), RyScott juggling, Storytime, dancing in a line, singing a royal song, building castles from blocks, a castle made from cardboard. Grandma Faye made gingerbread men. We have a crawlspace that Aly named "the forest" (in fairy tales the forest is dark and a bit mysterious). I told the children that they could go read in the forest. Shane (Matt's son) was NOT fooled. "Grammy", he said, "this isn't a mysterious forest, it's just plain ol' food storage

*Playing in the snow with spray bottles with food coloring and water. (mountains and cones). James has a plastic megaphone thing that he calls his "ipod". He also has bendable sticks he puts on like headphones to "check his email".

*Aly and James playing their play guitars. (Aly's bright pink, James' black)

*We invaded a South American restaurant close to our house. Richard and the two Ryans sang songs in Spanish (Karaoke style). we danced up a storm. Matt invited Malia to dance and she came running with her great big grin. We could hardly get around to eating the yummy food with all the dancing and singing.

We had a very fun 2nd Christmas with our family and Andy's mother-in-law. (We love Anita's whole family.)

This is Matt and Amy coming into the living room on Christmas morning.

Highlights of December 2007 - Part 5

New Year's Eve - For New Years Matt wanted to go dancing. I had to remind him that we have a baby and can't just go out and do things like that anymore. Especially New Years is difficult to just get a babysitter because other people want to celebrate too and because we like putting Amy to bed between 8:30 and 9:30 and in her own bed preferably. So we had our nephew, Ty, his wife, Abby, and their baby, Jack (born on my birthday this year) over for games. We stayed up til about 2:30 playing. It was great! Thanks for coming Boltons!

So that's all I can think of for now (as if that wasn't enough). Hope everyone had a great holiday!

Obedient Amy

So we had stake conference yesterday and the day before. Amy was behaving wonderfully which we appreciated because stake conference was wonderful. During the Sunday session opening prayer (which we barely made it for - we weren't on time either) Amy had gas. And of course there isn't nearly as much noise during a prayer as at any other time. So we could hear it clearly. I could also hear Matt trying to stifle his laughter. He heard mine too. We just think she has some funny timing and some loud gas.
But wait, it gets better. A few minutes later we were participating in Stake business. During the first time that we were called upon to sustain someone I looked down at Amy who was sitting in my lap. I intended to hold up her right arm so that she could participate with the rest of us. But lo and behold, she was already doing it. It looked very much on purpose, like Amy wanted to be like the rest of us and sustain the members of our stake in their callings. She even put her arm down with the rest of us. Matt and I were thrilled and so proud of our obedient and supportive three month old baby.
